Hopeland is part of the Wexford Harbour and Slobs special protection area and in winter it regularly holds nationally important numbers of bernikla obrożna and ohar.

Hopeland has recently become a regular site for warzęcha in winter with 1-6 birds seen over the last few years. Sightings of uszatka błotna and błotniak stawowy are also becoming more frequent.
