Opis
The Polichnitos saltpans are located on the southern side of the Gulf of Kalloni, and are way smaller compared to the Kalloni saltpans. Therefore, the area is great to get a good overview of the present birds, like waders, waterfowl, gulls and so much more. Starting from the spot where you can park your car for a circular route around the pans, you can scan the fields surrouding the car park for species, like pipits, wagtails, larks and dudek. Scattered bushes and trees around the house are good for migrants, like chats, shrikes and flycatchers.
The beach is a nice spot for waders, like breeding sieweczka morska, but also many other species, like piaskowiec, łęczak and sieweczka rzeczna. A track that leads you towards the southern part of the saltpans adjacent to the sea also provides great views over the bay.
The saltpans themselves are fantastic for a large variety of migrating waders, waterfowl, storks, warzęcha, egrets, herons and flaming różowy. The small dams between each pan can be covered in foraging waders, like biegus mały, biegus malutki, łęczak, biegus zmienny, biegus krzywodzioby, kwokacz, batalion and so much more! It is advised to stop and scan often while walking the track along the southern side of the pans. Large flocks of waterfowl can be present too, like kazarka rdzawa and cyranka, and in winter rożeniec and cyraneczka too. Like the other saltpans, large flocks of flaming różowy are often present.
The surrounding fields are great for migrating raptors, like błotniak stawowy and błotniak łąkowy. Above the wooded hill on the southern side of the pans, flocks of falcons can be seen too, like kobczyk during migration.
