After the completion of the gravel mining, the area was completely restructured in 1994 into a refuge for numerous animal and plant species. The Kohlplattenschlag offers a breeding, feeding and resting place for water birds, waders and migratory birds. Among the breeding birds are gąsiorek, zimorodek, dzięcioł średni, sieweczka rzeczna, brzegówka and błotniak stawowy. It is possible to observe the birds without disturbance in the three observation places.
