Lac des Bouillouses and the banks of the lake are a protected natural area. It is very popular with hikers and tourists as this mountain lake (2017 m) is the highest lake in the Pyrenees, accessible by road or chairlift. But the traffic is limited because nowadays in summer cars are not allowed to drive up. The lake is only accessible via shuttle buses or with a chairlift in Font-Romeu. Nonetheless for birding around the lake it is best to arrive before the crowds or go there late in the afternoon.
On the edges of the lake, there are meadows, dotted with rocks, pines and other bushy plants where cows and horses graze. It is on these grassy slopes that you can observe birds such as: białorzytka, świergotek łąkowy, pokrzywnica and makolągwa. On the pines along the road, you will find, among other birds, the krzyżodziób świerkowy, methodically depiautating the pine cones, and the osetnik. Other birds you can see in the area are drozd obrożny, orzeł przedni, sęp płowy, orłosęp, kruk, mysikrólik, sosnówka, czubatka, paszkot and lerka.

Français: Classé site naturel, le lac des Bouillouses est riche d’une faune et d’une flore exceptionnelles, c’est l’endroit idéal pour se promener. C’est d’ailleurs le plus haut lac accessible par la route ou par télésiège de tout le massif pyrénéen ! L’accès au site est cependant règlementé et il vous faudra l’atteindre à pied ou via des navettes si vous choisissez d’y aller en été. Sur les abords du lac, on trouve des prairies, parsemées de rochers, sillonnées de petits rus et plantées ça et là de Pins à crochets et autres plantes buissonnantes où paissent vaches et chevaux en totale liberté. C’est sur dans ces pentes herbeuses que vous pourrez observer des oiseaux tels que : Traquet motteux, Pipit farlouse, Accenteur mouchet et Linotte mélodieuse.

The road to the lake is closed from July 1 to August 31 from 7 am to 7 pm, as well as during the first and last weekend of September. Cars can be parked in the Pla de Barrès car park (see the map), departure point for the shuttle buses that will take you to the Lac des Bouilouses and the banks of the River Têt. Return possible until 9 pm. You can also take the chairlift at the Domaine de Font-Romeu, then walk for half an hour to the lake. Click on a P in the map to get directions to the parking of your choice. At the lake you can choose from several marked hiking trails, with different levels and durations depending on your starting point. On the map you see a circular walk of 10 km around the lake. Also recommended is the moon-like landscape and the various lakes around the hiking trail that leads to the top of Pic Carlit.

Français: La route du lac est fermée du 1er juillet au 31 août de 7h à 19h, ainsi que le premier et dernier week-end de septembre. Les voitures peuvent être garées au parking du Pla de Barrès, point de départ des navettes qui vous conduiront au lac des Bouilouses et aux berges de la rivière Têt. Retour possible jusqu'à 21h. Vous pouvez également emprunter le télésiège du Domaine de Font-Romeu, puis marcher une demi-heure jusqu'au lac. Cliquez sur un P dans la carte pour obtenir l'itinéraire vers le parking de votre choix. Au bord du lac, vous pouvez choisir parmi plusieurs sentiers de randonnée balisés, avec différents niveaux et durées selon votre point de départ. Sur la carte, vous voyez une promenade circulaire de 10 km autour du lac. Le paysage lunaire et les différents lacs autour du sentier de randonnée qui mène au sommet du Pic Carlit sont également recommandés.
