Montroeul-au-Bois, with its many agricultural fields dotted with bushes and hedges, is a very good site for observing small passerines typical of fields and meadows such as podróżniczek, świergotek łąkowy, trznadel, łozówka and piegża. Other birds typical of agricultural areas can be observed in Montroeul. For example, kuropatwa, czajka, przepiórka or bażant.
The proximity to Pétrieu wood is also very interesting because you can observe quite a few forest birds there such as krogulec, zniczek, sójka, and kowalik. In the surrounding hedges, there are a lot of kapturka, a few cierniówka and some gajówka.
Montroeul is also a very good place for the observation of owls such as pójdźka, puszczyk zwyczajny, uszatka and the rare puchacz which sings in the spring in the depths of the wood. You can also find some wintering raptors such as drzemlik and błotniak zbożowy.
Finally, the village is also a great place for spring and autumn migration. Many birds pass over the village in the spring. For example, Trzmielojad, bocian biały, the rare kania ruda, mewa żółtonoga and even, an an exceptional sighting, a sęp kasztanowaty in the spring of 2023. Every spring many drozd obrożny and białorzytka stop to take a short break in their migration. The same goes for the autumn migration where squadrons of droździk, kwiczoł and paszkot pass at full speed above the village, sometimes even making prolonged halts.

Français: Un petit village au naturel où l'on retrouve de nombreux oiseaux au fil des saisons. Avec ses nombreux terrains agricoles parsemés de buissons et de haies, Montroeul est un très bon site pour l'observation de petits passereaux typiques des champs et prairies tel que la podróżniczek, le świergotek łąkowy, le trznadel, la łozówka et la piegża. D'autres oiseaux typiques des zones agricoles évoluent à Montroeul. Par exemple, la kuropatwa, le czajka, la przepiórka ou encore le bażant.
La proximité avec le bois de Pétrieu est elle aussi très intéressante car nous pouvons y observer pas mal d'oiseaux des fôrets comme l'krogulec, le zniczek, le sójka, ou bien la kowalik. Dans les haies alentours, on retrouve beaucoup pas mal kapturka, quelques cierniówka et l'une ou l'autre gajówka. Montroeul est aussi un très bon lieu pour l'observation de chouettes et hiboux tel que la pójdźka, la puszczyk zwyczajny, le uszatka et le rare puchacz qui chante au printemps dans les fin fonds du bois. On peut aussi y retrouver de quelques rapaces hivernants tel que le drzemlik ou encore le błotniak zbożowy.
Enfin, Le village est aussi un super lieu pour la migration printanière et automnale. De nombreux oiseaux passent au dessus du village au printemps. Par exemple, la Trzmielojad, la bocian biały, le rare kania ruda, le mewa żółtonoga et même, lors d'une observation exceptionnelle, un sęp kasztanowaty au printemps 2023. Chaque printemps font halte de nombreux drozd obrożny et białorzytka pour faire une petite pause dans leur migration. De même pour les migrations automnales où des escadrons de droździk, kwiczoł et paszkot passent à pleine vitesse au dessus du village, faisant même parfois des haltes prolongées.

Montroeul-au-Bois is located about 14 km east of Tournai. There are parking spaces at Place de Montroeul-au-Bois, at the foot of the church. Click on the P in the map for directions. The circular route indicated on the map is about 7 km.
