Opis

Etangs de Stavelot are lakes that were dug by the ancient meandering of the Amblève. Modified by monks, the ponds then served as fishponds to the abbey. Today, large poplars stand at the entrance of the site and, on both sides of the ponds, reed beds offer birds hiding and nesting places. Sometimes rare birds are observed, for example uhla in 2018 (see the picture above).

Français: Creusés par un ancien méandre de l’Amblève, ces bassins sont alimentés par des eaux de ruissellement et par de nombreuses sources. Aménagés par les moines, les étangs ont alors servi de viviers à l’abbaye. Plus tard, d’impressionnants bâtiments de tannerie, aujourd’hui disparus, s’installèrent sur leurs rives. Aujourd’hui, de grands peupliers vous accueillent à l’entrée du site et, de part et d’autres des deux étangs, des roselières offrent à de nombreux oiseaux et autres petits animaux cachettes et abris, endroits de nidification ou échappatoires lors du passage d’un prédateur. 3 étangs. The Etangs de Stavelot are located on the southwestern edge of the town of Stavelot. Parking next to the cemetery. Click on the P in the map for directions. From the parking spot you can explore the area on foot.
