Opis
De Maten is one of the oldest nature reserves in Flanders. The damming of the Stiemerbeek, centuries ago, created long chains of ponds in the stream valleys that were used to breed fish for consumption. The area, which is 536 hectares in size, is protected as a Natura 2000 area. The large reed fields are an ideal residence for reed and marsh birds like podróżniczek, potrzos and trzcinniczek (zwyczajny). Many birds breed here. For example czernica and Płaskonos.
