Open pasture and mudflats bordering the River Thames. Modern visitor centre run by Essex Wildlife Trust.
The main areas of interest are the riverside and other tidal areas, where many waterfowl gather and are pushed up to viewing areas by rising tides.
Main access is by car, with ample parking. Bikes possible. Best appoached via Buckingham Hill Road and Walton's Hall Road, where signing is best. Once there, footpaths are good and extensive.
Prime interest is from the waterside hide as the tide comes in. This happens rapidly so be in place well before high tide (perhaps 2-3 hours beforehand).
