Bern  >  Switzerland

The Gurten is Bern's local hill with a great view. Birds of prey migration can be observed very well at this location in autumn.

Description

From August to October, numerous thermal gliding birds can be observed passing through the skies around Gurten. The best time is late August and early September. Then large numbers of Vepsevåk are possible. With a bit of luck, Svartstork will also pass by. Other regular species are: Musvåk, Spurvehauk, Hønsehauk, Tårnfalk, Lerkefalk, Glente, Svartglente, Fiskeørn, Enghauk, Sivhauk and Stork. In later autumn large flocks of Ringdue pass by. From time to time Alpeseiler can be observed on food flights.

Access

The Gurten hill is located directly south of Bern city center. The best way is to take the Gurtenbahn funicular that runs from the city to the Gurten. From there it is only a 10 minutes walk to the viewing and observation point.
