Beautiful botanical garden on a hill above the ocean. The garden attracts birds all year round. Best place in Tenerife to see Hærfugl up close.

Description

The Palmetum is a 12-hectare botanical garden in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife that specialises in palm trees. The garden was started in 1995 on a former landfill and only opened to the public in 2014. The valuable palm collection has about 600 species of palms and it is focused on the ones native to world islands. All gardens are maintained with no pesticides and no fertilizers.

The gardens include a large system of waterfalls, streams and ponds. This is very attractive for birds and many birds can be easily seen in the Palmetum. A couple of Hærfugl breed in the area and are not shy at all. If you are lucky they drop to the ground right at your feet. Other interesting birds that you can encounter are Natthegre, Hornugle, Vintererle, Silkehegre, Grønnfink, Berberhøne, Turteldue and Middelhavsspurv. The garden attracts birds all year round, and sometimes rarities during migration.
