Just a few meters from Las Galletas Beach these shallow gravel pools in southern Tenerife attract migratory waders.
Gravera de las Galletas is one of the rare wetlands for migratory waders on the southern slope of Tenerife. It has a peculiar location, right along the road, next to the beach. The area was formed as a result of extraction of gravel, becoming a set of small brackish ponds that maintained permanently. The water level has significant fluctuations, due both to the changing rhythm of the tides and to greater or lesser autumn rainfall. Among the birds you can encounter are Sandlo, Strandsnipe, Silkehegre, Gluttsnipe, Myrsnipe, Steinvender, Tundrasnipe, Varsler and Vintererle. Also more rare waders on the Canary Islands like Polarsnipe, Stylteløper, Tundralo, Temmincksnipe, Skogsnipe, Grønnstilk and Gulbeinsnipe have been observed here.
Gravera de las Galletas is located on the south coast of Tenerife in the village of Las Galletas, next to the beach of Playa de las Galletas. You can park directly beside the beach. Click on the P in the map for directions.
