Braničevo  >  Serbia

The 360° view of The Hill of Ram is breathtaking, and the birds of prey seem to like it.

Description

The Hill of Ram is in a very strategic position on the Danube riverside. Because of that, many civilizations used it as an outpost over centuries, from Celts (Celtic Sanctuary) via Romans (The Lederata Fortress) to Turks (The Ram Fortress). Nowadays, only the recently renewed Ram Fortress is still supervising the Danube. The top of the hill is known as the Gorica Hill ('Small mountain'), from where the view is open towards the Srebrno Jezero Danube section.

This strategic position also attracts the birds of prey, which like to circle near the hill's peaks, especially around Gorica Hill. The predators include Musvåk, Vepsevåk, Slangeørn, Småskrikørn, Dvergørn, Havørn, Spurvehauk, Hønsehauk, Tårnfalk, and Lerkefalk. From other birds look for Sanglerke, Trelerke, Turteldue, Hærfugl, Bieter, and Tornskate.

The Hill of Ram is part of the IBA Labudovo Okno.

Access

Head to Ram town and park in one of the town's parking places or continue uphill via Karađorđeva street and the devious sandy road that extends it to the soccer stadium (avoid the steep uphill road from the town directly to the stadium, it is only passable by foot or bike). From the parking place near the stadium, the sandy road goes only slightly uphill and it is possible to continue with the car for an additional 1-1.5km, but be aware of the relatively steep sandy sections afterward. Click on a P on the map for directions to a suitable parking spot.
