Access

There are many trails to follow on foot and stops to make by car. The suggested walking route on the map is 13 km long and can be started on different points, for example next to the Camping site of Merujal in the heart of Freita. Click on a P in the map to get directions to the starting point of your choice. The route is a mountain hike most of the time above 1000m altitude. On the viewpoint of São Pedro Velho (see the map), half of Portugal can be seen: Serra da Estrela to the East, Caramulo to the south, the ocean and ria de Aveiro to the west, and to the north, many interesting points such as Serra Montemuro, Marão and even the Gerês in good days. Shepherds with groups of goats and cows roam through the area. During the walk you pass a number of wind turbines. This trail is good anytime of the year, but it’s very exposed and the wind can be strong. So put on good walking shoes and make sure you have the right clothes with you depending on the weather.
