Saltmarsh area right on the edge of city of Olhão. Very rich in waders/aquatic birds, especially in winter. Great spot to see Flamingo up close.
Salinas de Olhão is a very accessible area with nice variety of waders and other aquatic bird species in the area, especially in the winter. Species such as Flamingo, Småspove, Sandløper, Myrsnipe and Gulerle can be seen quite close.
The saltpans are situated in the saltmarshes. Once you've parked you can easily enter the area walking or cycling and explore every saltpan that is accessible (some are blocked or there is no way to access without getting kneedeep in the mud). In the northern ones you will find ducks such as the Gravand, Stokkand and Snadderand, whereas closer to the lagoon (sea side) you'll find more waders such as the Myrsnipe, Sandløper, Tundrasnipe, Hvitbrystlo, Sandlo, Småspove and Stylteløper. A bit further way from the access, to the east, it is very common to find groups of Flamingo that allow bystanders to get quite close.
Very good place for watching waders and Fiskeørn. Best time of day about 2 hours after high tide. When water gets lower the birds spread out so they are further away then.
Top location. Many waders.
Also Hvitbrystlo, Rovterne, Blåstrupe, Svarthodesanger, Smalnebbmåke, Dvergsnipe seen on 17th October.
Currently (February 2025) less interesting since a huge building is being constructed. This disturbs the wildlife seriously.
