A mix of old salt pans and salt marshes. Among the birds you can encounter are Stylteløper, Avosett, Rødstilk and Skjeand.
The old salt pans at Ria Formosa are used by lots of birds for rest and foraging. Parts of the area are salt marshes influenced by the tide and they change rapidly with incoming or leaving water. A wooden pathway leads through the marshland. Dunes frame the salt marshes. Especially during migration and througout the winter migrating birds can be seen. The pathsways are easy to walk, but you can also take a bicyle as it is part of the EuroVelo 1 - Atlantic Coast Route.
The Ria Formosa Ecovia Extension is located east of the city of Olhão. There are a limited number of parking spots at the road Rua das Fontes Santas. Click on the P in the map for directions. There is a little picnic area and you get to the salt pans by walking underneath the train track. But be aware that it is only possible to take the walkway underneath the train tracks during low tide (see the tides table below). With high tide the water rises and you will have to walk up to the train tracks and cross them, which is not recommended. Another option is parking at the Rua da Praia. The wooden pathway starts close by. It is easy to reach the area by bicycle.
