Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Gulbeinmåke, Sildemåke and Hettemåke. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Småspove, Steinvender, Sandløper and Strandsnipe.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Makrellterne and Rosenterne, but sometimes also Splitterne.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Gulnebblire can be observed. Small numbers of Spisshalepetrell can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Havlire and Makaronesialire.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Ringnebbmåke, Grønlandsmåke and, in 2011, a Gulkronehegre.
