An excellent area for birdwatching, combining the 'bocage' traditional agricultural landscape with extensive ricefields, perfect for a natural mosaic.
The Canelas route begins at Ribeiro de Canelas and follows this watercourse, a branch of the Ria de Aveiro. It stretches for about 4 km in the shape of a 'U,' where visitors can experience various habitats typical of this region, highlighted by a rural and authentic mosaic known as 'Bocage'.
Quiet, peaceful, it is a very good area for birdwatching, especially during the migration season, housing a number of waders and warblers that occur here in very interesting numbers. There are many signs and posters of environmental education and awareness, as this trail is part of the BioRia Natural Biosfere Reserve.
Bioria - Percurso de Canelas is located south of the town of Estarreja and close to village of Canelas. The area can be reached by train or car. If you opt by train, you must exit on the Canelas Train station (part of the Porto-Aveiro Sub-urban train system by CP-Comboios de Portugal) and head south through Rua da Estação. At the crossroad, take the left, go trough the tunnel underneath the train tracks and begin your path there. There are signs leading to the trails.
By car: If you take the A1 or A29, take the exit that leads to ESTARREJA/SALREU (BIORIA). Then, proceed west, following the signs of N109 until you reach the village of Salreu. When you reach the roundabout of the main church of the village, take the third exit, going south. Continue until you find the village of Canelas and turn left on Rua da Estação (next to Pastelaria Cegonha Encantada). Follow that road all the way to the end (you will pass by the train station). At the end, take the left turn and park. The trail starts in front of you. There are many signs along the roads that say BIORIA-PERCURSOS that lead there.
These trails are part of the complex of the Bioria Reserve and can be completed in about 90 to 120 minutes. Beware of the weather, as it may flood due to the increasing of the riverflow.
