The nutrient-rich waters off Kaikōura attract great numbers of different seabirds, wales and dolphins - encounter them on a pelagic tour!
The geography with the Kaikōura Canyon close to the coastal waters creates an upwelling of nutrient-rich waters that support large numbers of animals from krill, to fish, to marine mammals and seabirds. A pelagic tour gives you the opportunity to see several species of albatross from the gigantic Northern Royal Albatross to the smaller, beautiful Buller's Albatross, many different petrels such as Cape Petrel and White-chinned Petrel, shearwaters including Short-tailed Shearwater and the locally endemic Hutton's Shearwater, Fairy Prion, and more.
Kaikōura lies about 2.5h North of Christchurch along SH1. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. Pelagic tours targeting seabirds are offered from Kaikōura (Albatross Encounter), but you also often get good views of the birds from whale watching tours.
