Description
De Mepper Hooilanden is a nature reserve that borders the Gees Forestry. It is an impressive area of pools and low, barren grasslands of nearly 100 ha with herds of Scottish Highland cattle. In the cold months of the year, many birds hibernate in the nature reserve and it is a stopping place for geese, swans and ducks. Birds that you can encounter here in winter are Skjeand, Snadderand, Brunnakke, Stjertand, Krikkand, Taffeland, Tundragås, Dvergsvane, Sangsvane. Among the other birds you can see in the area are Knekkand, Gjøk, Vipe, Brushane, Gluttsnipe, Skjestork, Gulspurv, Sivhauk, Myrhauk and Havørn.

Nederlands: De Mepper Hooilanden is een natuurgebied dat grenst aan Boswachterij Gees. De hooi- of onlanden zijn na de eeuwwisseling afgegraven en heringericht voor de waterberging en om de Geeserstroom weer haar natuurlijke loop terug te geven. Het resultaat is een indrukwekkend gebied van plassen en lage, schrale graslanden van bijna 100 ha en kuddes Schotse Hooglanders. In de koude maanden van het jaar overwinteren veel vogels in het natuurgebied en is het een pleisterplaats voor ganzen, zwanen en eenden. Vogels die je hier kunt tegenkomen in de winter zijn Skjeand, Snadderand, Brunnakke, Stjertand, Krikkand, Taffeland, Tundragås, Dvergsvane, Sangsvane. Andere vogels door het jaar heen zijn Knekkand, Gjøk, Vipe, Brushane, Gluttsnipe, Skjestork, Gulspurv, Sivhauk, Myrhauk en Havørn.

Access
Parking at the Tilweg in Gees in the parking lot of Staatsbosbeheer. Continue until past bungalow park Tilkamp. In a bend to the left is the parking lot. Click on the P in the map for directions. The 8 km circular walk shown on the map goes around the Mepper Hooilanden and through a small part of the forest of Gees Boswachterij.
