One of the last raised bog areas in Western Europe, the Fochteloërveen is one of the best preserved high moor areas in the Netherlands.

Description

Fochteloërveen is a 2500 ha nature reserve on the border of the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Drenthe, near the village of Veenhuizen. It is one of the few and best-preserved high moor areas in the Netherlands. After centuries of absence, the Trane was breeding again in 2001 in the Netherlands in the Fochteloërveen. If you are very lucky you can see them from lookout tower De Zeven. In winter you can see birds like Varsler, Dompap, Ravn, Grønnsisik, Vintererle and Myrhauk . During the rest of the year one can see Skjestork, Svartspett, Buskskvett, Gulsanger and Munk, among many others. And Trane of course.

Nederlands: Fochteloërveen is een 2500 ha groot natuurgebied op de grens van de Nederlandse provincies Friesland en Drenthe, vlakbij het dorp Veenhuizen. Een must voor Nederlandse vogelaars, omdat er enkele soorten voorkomen die op andere plekken in Nederland moeilijk te zien zijn zoals Buskskvett, Tornskate en Trane. Het is een van de weinige en best bewaarde hoogveengebieden van Nederland. Na eeuwen van afwezigheid broedde de Trane in 2001 weer in Nederland in het Fochteloërveen. Als je geluk hebt kom je ze tegen in het gebied, langs een van de wandel- of fietspaden of kun je ze zien vanaf uitkijktoren De Zeven. Het fenomenale uitzicht vanaf deze toren is sowieso de moeite waard (zie de bovenstaande foto). In de winter kun je vogels zien als Varsler, Dompap, Ravn, Grønnsisik, Vintererle en Myrhauk. Gedurende de rest van het jaar kan men onder andere Knekkand, Skjestork, Svartspett, Buskskvett, Gulsanger en Munk zien. Let op: de Trane is een schuwe vogel die verstoringsgevoelig is. Blijf daarom op de paden en benader de vogels niet om foto's te maken of van dichterbij te bekijken.

Access

The Fochteloërveen is a huge area. If you want to explore it completely, it's best to do it by bike. We recommend 3 beautiful places in the area that are close to each other and where you can see some of the characteristic bird species. The first is a circular walk of 2 km at the Information Center Fochteloërveen. This short walk runs through a nice wet part of the Fochteloërveen with some ponds and there is also a bird watching hide. There is a parking space (see the star with walk 1 on the map). The second walk runs through the part where Buskskvett can often be seen and is 3.8 km. (see the star with walk 2) on the map. There is also a separate parking lot there. Finally, there is a short walk of about 1 km to the the 7 watchtower (has the shape of a seven) See the star with walk 3 on the map. You can visit all those different parking lots by car and walk from there, but even better is to cycle the connecting parts, because you cycle through beautiful parts that are only accessible by bike (or on foot). Click on a P in the map to get directions to the car park of your choice. Note: Make sure you wear waterproof high walking shoes, especially in a wet period.

Nederlands: Het Fochteloërveen is een enorm groot gebied. Als je het helemaal wilt verkennen kun je dat het beste op de fiets doen. Wij tippen hier 3 mooie plekken in het gebied die dicht bij elkaar liggen en waar je een paar van de kenmerkende vogelsoorten kunt zien. De eerste is een rondwandeling van 2 km bij het Informatiecentrum Fochteloërveen. Deze korte wandeling loopt door een mooi nat gedeelte van het Fochteloërveen met enkele plassen en er is ook een vogelkijkwand. Er is een parkeerplaats (zie op de kaart de ster met wandeling 1). De tweede wandeling loopt door het deel waar vaak Buskskvett te zien is en is 3,8 km. (zie op de kaart de ster met wandeling 2) Ook daar ligt een aparte parkeerplaats bij. Tenslotte is er nog een korte wandeling van ongeveer 1 km naar uitkijktoren De Zeven van weer een volgende parkeerplaats (zie op de kaart de ster met wandeling 3). Je kunt al die verschillende parkeerplaatsen met de auto bezoeken en van daaruit wandelen, maar nog mooier is de verbindende stukken te fietsen, omdat je door prachtige stukken fietst die alleen met de fiets (of te voet) toegankelijk zijn. Klik op een P in de kaart om een routebeschrijving te krijgen naar de parkeerplaats van je keuze. Let op: Zorg dat je bij wandeling 2 waterdichte hoge wandelschoenen draagt, zeker in een natte periode.

If you are by car: the road between the parking lots of the first and second walk has been closed with barriers since 2023. Both parking spaces are accessible. You can only reach the parking lot of the first walk from a northerly direction and the parking lot of the second walk only from a southerly direction. To drive from one parking lot to another by car, you have to take a detour via Fochteloo and Appelscha (approx. 20 minutes). You can walk (and also cycle) directly between the two parking lots: the distance is more than a kilometer, so it's about a 2.5 kilometer walk there and back.

Nederlands: Als je met de auto bent: de weg tussen de parkeerplaatsen van de eerste en tweede wandeling is sinds 2023 afgesloten met slagbomen. Beide parkeerplaatsen zijn wel bereikbaar. Je kunt de parkeerplaats van de eerste wandeling alleen vanuit noordeljke richting bereiken en de parkeerplaats van de tweede wandeling alleen vanuit zuidelijke richting. Om met de auto van de ene parkeerplaats naar de andere te rijden moet je omrijden via Fochteloo en Appelscha (ca. 20 minuten). Je kunt wel rechtstreeks wandelen (en ook fietsen) tussen de beide parkeerplaatsen: de afstand is een ruime kilometer, dus heen en terug ca. 2,5 kilometer lopen.
