Description
The Lepelaarplassen consist of ponds, reed fields and wet grasslands. A paradise for water and marsh birds. The nature reserve (created when southern Flevoland fell dry) was designated as a nature reserve in 1971. Besides the Skjestork, over three hundred other species of birds have been seen here.

Nederlands: De Lepelaarplassen is een van de toplocaties in Flevoland om vogels te kijken. De Lepelaarplassen bestaan uit plassen, rietvelden en natte graslanden. Een paradijs voor water- en moerasvogels. Het natuurgebied (ontstaan toen Zuid-Flevoland droogviel) werd in 1971 aangewezen als natuurgebied. Naast de Skjestork zijn hier meer dan driehonderd andere vogelsoorten waargenomen. Zie de vogellijst beneden voor een selectie van vogels die vaak in het gebied worden gezien.

Access
The visitor center is closed because a new visitor center is being built. But the Lepelaarplassen can still be visited. Parking is available in several places. Also at Camping Waterhout (Trekvogelweg 10), where an intermediate information point is located in the restaurant of the campsite (with information about nature and walking and cycling routes). Along the cycle path around the Lepelaarplassen are several observation huts from which you have a beautiful view of this bird-rich pasture area, the Storskarv colony, the "Grote Plas" and the surrounding willow forest. The route that is shown on the map is about 10 km.

Nederlands: Het bezoekerscentrum van Het Flevo-landschap is momenteel gesloten omdat er een nieuw bezoekerscentrum wordt gebouwd. Het Lepelaarplassengebied is wel gewoon te bezoeken. Parkeren kan op meerdere plekken. Ook bij Camping Waterhout (Trekvogelweg 10) waar een tussentijds infopunt is gevestigd in de brasserie van de camping (met informatie over de natuur en wandel- en fietsroutes). Langs het fietspad rond de Lepelaarplassen liggen verschillende kijkhutten van waaruit je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over dit vogelrijke gebied, de kolonie met Storskarv, de Grote Plas en het omringende wilgenbos. De route op de kaart is ongeveer 10 km.

The observation huts "De Lepelaar", "De Kiekendief" and "Oeverloper" along the circular cycle path are freely accessible. There are regular excursions that take you inside the area.
