Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin, close to the Jordanian border, has farmed fish in freshwater ponds since 1942. These and the orchards and irrigated fields attract birds.
Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin is an agricultural community specialising in fish farming and irrigated crops. It is at the north end of the Jordan valley, a pinch point for migration between Africa and Europe. Thus up to 50,000 Stork, 50,000 Aftenfalk, 400,000 Vepsevåk, 140,000 Småskrikørn, plus Dvergørn, Steppe Buzzard, Slangeørn, Sporevipe, Temmincksnipe, etc may pass through the area. The ponds attract herons, egrets, storks, pelicans, flamingos, Isfugl, Terneisfugl and Kastanjeisfugl, Sivhauk, Dvergrørdrum, Dvergskarv, Skjestork, Enkeltbekkasin and Kvartbekkasin. Drainage of the ponds causes a high concentration of birds.
Location is south east of Beit Shean, close to the Jordanian border. The area has an observation platform, and a birdwatching centre. In summer, avoid the midday heat (45 centigrade), and carry plenty of drinking water. The route on the map is about 6 km.
