Crete  >  Greece

The smaller and slightly quieter version of the Samariá Gorge, but also very beautiful.

Description

Imbros Gorge is very beautiful rocky valley where you walk towards the sea. The 11 km long canyon and 8 km long walking trail is a popular hiking destination, offering a less challenging alternative to the nearby Samaria Gorge. Birds you can observe include Blåtrost, Gåsegribb, Klippesvale, Alpekråke, Topplerke, Middelhavssteinskvett and Kornspurv.

Access

Imbros Gorge is located near Hora Sfakion in southern Crete. At the top of the gorge you can park. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. Entrance to the gorge costs 2 or 3 euros per person (2023). Take this cash with you to be sure. The hike through Imbros Gorge is about 8 km long and can be completed in 2 to 3 hours. The path is rocky and gently slopes downward. Make sure to wear proper hiking shoes and bring plenty of water.

At the bottom of the gorge you can take a taxi bus (which runs back and forth regularly) back to the parking lot. Also take cash with you for this. I have to say that I felt quite unsafe in the taxi bus driving up the very narrow and steep mountain road with hairpin bends out of the valley. You can also walk the same route back through the Samaria Gorge.
