Description

Alykes Salt Lake is a protected wetland near Tigaki. The salt pans operated until 1989 as a sea salt production site. Today, this lagoon of salt water is a protected area for migratory birds. Even if the place is famous for Flamingo, in the right seasons you can easily spot different birds such as Rustspurv, Rustand, Sporevipe and different other shorebirds and songbirds. The lake dries out during summer, leaving behind an all-white surface from the remaining salt.

Other than birds the lake offers a great example of halophilic plants growing on the dunes between the salt lake and the sea. You can also find other animals, such as the beautiful butterfly Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus) and dragonflies.
