Very good place to see Tornskate during late spring and summer. Plenty of other birds, too.
NSG Lüsekamp is a nature reserve right on the Dutch-German border. It is home to many birds of the open mixed landscape and most famous for Tornskate, but also plenty of other birds, for example Gulspurv, Tornsanger, Hagesanger, Rørsanger, Vipe and others. Best time to go is late spring / early summer, but you will be able to find birds all year around. Some migrating ducks in migration season and Varsler and Myrhauk during winter, although these are a bit more scarce and you need some luck to see. The route indicated on the map is only from the car park to the observation point near the reed and water areas. You can venture further than that as seen on the roads in the map.
A car park is right behind behind the border station. You can reach it by getting off A52 in Elmpt and following the motorway in parallel to the Dutch border or you can cross into Netherlands and get off right behind the border and circle back through the border crossing station. The converted farm Gitstapper Hof near the village of Etsberg is an ideal place to spend the night near De Meinweg National Park. The farm used to supply the adjacent Gitstapper water mill with wheat for milling. The farm has recently been completely renovated and since this renovation it has been possible to spend the night at this authentic location. Gitstapper Hof is located close to the old water mill and two restaurants, but mainly in a wonderfully quiet area on the fields between the lake Effelderwaldsee and the adjacent forest.
Double room from €75 per night. Offer: for € 45.00 per person you can book a Burgundian breakfast and a delicious 3-course menu in the evening in the adjacent restaurant Aan De Hoeve.
