Description
The Nienwohlder Moor is a nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein. The 398 hectare nature reserve lies northeast of Hamburg between the villages of Nienwohld, Nahe,Itzstedt and Sülfeld. It protects a drained and mostly gated high bog area, which is the largest and best preserved bog remnant in Schleswig-Holstein. It is now an open bog with numerous water-filled peat engravings surrounded by a bog forest in the area of former industrial use. The nature reserve is also an important habitat for birds. There are various waders such as Storspove and Enkeltbekkasin as well as ducks like Skjeand, Krikkand, Knekkand and Toppand. Also many Trepiplerke, Heipiplerke and Svartstrupe. Sivhauk and Varsler can be found too. The moorland area is good for Trane which are now breeding here again. In the wooded moorland areas you can find various woodpecker species and Tornskate and many songbirds.
