Old clarification ponds from a sugar factory that attract many birds. Sadly there is a fence around the ponds, so birding the area is not always easy.
The Klärteiche on the outskirts of the village of Plattling are the clarification ponds of a sugar factory which is 500 meters north. The shallow ponds attract waders like Brushane, Gluttsnipe and Sotsnipe during migration. But there are also deeper ponds that attract ducks and reedbirds. Among the other birds that you can see in the area are Blåstrupe, Rørsanger, Dvergdykker, Taffeland, Stjertand, Pungmeis (rare), Sivhauk, Steinskvett and Buskskvett. But the area has a big downside. There is a fence around the entire pond area, so you can not access the area. The fence makes birding very difficult. One can peek onto some ponds through the fence and bushes (see the viewpoint markers on the map). But on the Southern and Western side the view is rather poor, it's better in the Southeastern corner. The Klärteiche Plattling would have an A or B rating without the fences. But with fences only a C rating, because the view on the area is so poor. So only worth checking out if you are in the area or passing by.
Plattling can be reached via the A92 in the direction of Deggendorf, Plattling-Nord exit. On the state road 2124 you drive in the direction of Plattling, past a shopping center until you see the stream Plattlinger Mühlbach on the left. At a small bridge that crosses the stream, turn left from the main road, cross the bridge and park here.
