Description
The Halterner Stausee is a reservoir that consists of two sub-basins, a big north basin and a small south basin. In the north basin there is an island with a size of about 30 hectares. There is a nice walk around the north lake and during winter there is a chance to spot arctic migrants. Among the birds you can see are Toppdykker, Dvergdykker, Smålom, Granmeis, Toppmeis and Laksand, Kvinand and many other species of ducks.

Access
There is a 8,5 km long walking track around the lake that is accessible from all sides. You can either park in the town of Haltern or as I would recommend on the eastern shore near the Jugendherberge (Youthhostel).
