The Grand Mare wildlife reserve is part of the Marais Vernier and managed by the French Office for Biodiversity.
The Observatoire de la Grand Mare is located in the heart of the Marais Vernier, the largest peat bog in France that covers approximately 4,500 hectares and is renowned for its rich and varied biodiversity. The Marais Vernier is a former meander of the Seine River. The Grand Mare reserve is one of the only natural ponds in the Seine-Normandy basin. It covers 147 hectares, including 40 hectares of water. It is an important migration area for birds, and a great spot for birdwatching. The observation tower offers a great vantage point to admire various bird species such as ducks (Skjeand, Brunnakke, Krikkand, Stjertand), coots, geese, harriers, grebes, cormorants, and herons.
