Oakland Nature Preserve is a 150-acre preserve with a variety of ecosystems and over 13 miles of hiking trails and boardwalks. The red trail is host to many different sparrows like Chipping Sparrow and Grasshopper Sparrow in the winter. The forested areas near the parking lot and along the boardwalk can also host migrant birds. The boardwalk goes all the way up to Lake Apopka where many wading birds can be seen as well.

Oakland Nature Preserve is located just off the turnpike. Take Exit 272, FL-50/Colonial Drive, off Florida’s Turnpike. Head west on FL-50/W Colonial Drive, towards Clermont, for 0.87 miles. Turn right onto FL-438, Oakland Avenue, for 1.16 miles. Turn left onto Machete Trail, and proceed through the Preserve entrance, to the parking lot. When entering the park, parking will be on the right. Press P on the map for directions.

The preserve is open 365 days a year Sunrise to Sunset. There is no cost to enter Oakland Nature Preserve, hike the trails, or visit the museum. However, donations are greatly appreciated and can be made at various donation stations around the preserve or the education center.
