RSPB Matford Marsh is on the Western edge of the City of Exeter in South Devon.
RSPB Matford Marsh (or Marshes) is a relatively smallish reserve on the West edge of Exeter in South Devon. It is an area that floods regularly and acts as a flood relief for the surrounding area. It has a main road (A 379) on it's Southern border, to the East of the site the main Penzance to Paddington railway runs forming it's Eastern border, on it's North/North Western edge are numerous industrial and car dealerships. Witgat and Kemphaan are regularly seen as well as commoner species, amongst waterfowl Amerikaanse Smient and other neartic species have occurred.
Leave Exeter on the A379 signed to Exminster, this road eventually crosses over the Penzance/Paddington main railine, this main dual carriageway (called Bridge Road) eventually nears a large roundabout, get in Right Hand lane (NOT Exminster) signed Plymouth/Alphington. On exiting the roundabout continue on this road to next roundabout, on approaching this roundabout get in Right hand lane (signed right turn only) and follow signs to Matford Park & Ride where there is a FREE CAR PARK on the Left, after parking follow map trail through Industrial/Car Dealerships to the Marsh.
NOTE, the small layby on the A379 (Plymouth/Alphington) road NO longer exists, due to road realignment, the following map has been adjusted.
FURTHER NOTE, as of 4th July 2023, a NEW Railway Station has opened at Marsh Barton (just North of the site), giving another option to travel to RSPB Matford Marsh, the walk through the car dealership/industrial units should take approximately 15 minutes to get to the Marsh, it should be noted that whilst the station is on the Paddington to Penzance mainline, only local trains (Paignton to Exmouth) stop at Marsh Barton, for those travelling from further afield change at Exeter St David's or Newton Abbot onto the local train (for location of Marsh Barton Railway Station press STAR on map to the North).
For those with time an elevated view of the marsh can be gained from Bridge Road (some trees can restrict views), see STAR ON MAP. BE WARNED BRIDGE ROAD IS A CLEARWAY WITH STRICTLY NO PARKING.
