From August to October, numerous thermal gliding birds can be observed passing through the skies around Gurten. The best time is late August and early September. Then large numbers of Wespendief are possible. With a bit of luck, Zwarte Ooievaar will also pass by. Other regular species are: Buizerd, Sperwer, Havik, Torenvalk, Boomvalk, Rode Wouw, Zwarte Wouw, Visarend, Grauwe Kiekendief, Bruine Kiekendief and Ooievaar. In later autumn large flocks of Houtduif pass by. From time to time Alpengierzwaluw can be observed on food flights.

The Gurten hill is located directly south of Bern city center. The best way is to take the Gurtenbahn funicular that runs from the city to the Gurten. From there it is only a 10 minutes walk to the viewing and observation point.
