Just outside the village of Vegas Altas extensive rice fields start. The fields receive important winter concentrations of Kraanvogel and several species of waders like Grutto, Bontbekplevier, Steltkluut, Goudplevier, Kleine Strandloper, Groenpootruiter, Kemphaan, Bonte Strandloper, Oeverloper, Witgat, Watersnip and Bosruiter. During the migratory passages, you can also see other wintering birds such as Blauwborst, Waterpieper or Rietgors. Other birds you can spot in the area are Iberische Klapekster, Tijgervink, Sint-Helenafazantje and Hop. Also many wintering birds of prey (sometimes in high densities) like Bruine Kiekendief, Blauwe Kiekendief, Rode Wouw, Grijze Wouw, Smelleken and Velduil. Best times for a visit are winter and spring, from November to May. From June to October it can be very quiet on the fields.
