Valcorchero is a small paradise for bird watching. The slopes of Mount Valcorchero and its surroundings are full of cork oaks that give their name to the mountain (cork valley). But you also find holm oaks, oaks or ash trees among other plant species. The cork oaks on the granite outcrops create a beautiful landscape that is ideal for walking and birding. The wide views over the valley facilitate the observation of birds in flight, such as Steenarend, Slangenarend, Vale Gier, Aasgier, Monniksgier, Dwergarend or Rode Wouw.
But also the forested areas, in which the cork oaks alternate with pastures, granite rocks, thickets (brooms, hawthorns, rose hips, etc.) and small wetlands, constitute a favorable mosaic of habitats for birds. Some of the most representative species you can see are Rode Patrijs, Iberische Klapekster, Roodkopklauwier, Blauwe Ekster, Cirlgors, Nachtegaal, Boomleeuwerik, Kleine Zwartkop, Raaf, Bijeneter, Hop, Wielewaal and Westelijke Orpheusgrasmus. Espagnol: El monte Valcorchero es un monte público con una superficie de 1184 hectáreas en el término municipal de Plasencia y perteneciente a la sierra del Gordo. Fundamentalmente está adornado por alcornoques que dan su nombre al monte (valle del corcho) aunque también encontramos encinas, robles o fresnos entre otras especies vegetales. Estamos en un espacio de un altísimo valor estético, un paisaje que parece haber sido dibujado para el paseo. Los alcornocales asentados sobre los afloramientos graníticos le dan un carácter abrupto al perfil y fueron los principales responsables de su declaración como paisaje protegido.
Valcorchero es un pequeño paraíso para la observación de aves. Las amplias vistas sobre el valle facilitan la observación de aves en vuelo, como águila real, águila culebrera, buitre leonado, ratonero común, águila calzada o milano real. Pero su espectacular masa forestal, en la que los alcornoques se alternan con pastizales, roquedos graníticos, matorrales (escobas, majuelos, escaramujos, etcétera) y pequeñas zonas húmedas (charcas, fuentes y abrevaderos), constituyen un mosaico muy favorable para las aves. Algunas de las especies más representativas serían Rode Patrijs, Iberische Klapekster, Roodkopklauwier, Blauwe Ekster, Cirlgors, Nachtegaal, Boomleeuwerik, Kleine Zwartkop, Raaf, Bijeneter, Hop, Wielewaal y Westelijke Orpheusgrasmus.

The area is close to the city of Plasencia you can walk to the area from the city. Another and closer option is to leave from the parking of the Virgen del Puerto hospital through the existing picnic area there. You can take as a reference the remains of the old aqueduct to reach the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora Virgen del Puerto. This point also has a wonderful view of Plasencia. Click on the P in the map to get directions to the parking of the Virgen del Puerto hospital. The circular walk that is shown on the map is about 7,5 km long.

Una gran opción es salir desde el hospital Virgen del Puerto atravesando el merendero allí existente. Podemos tomar como referencia los restos del antiguo acueducto para llegar hasta el santuario de Nuestra Señora Virgen del Puerto. Este punto es ideal para contemplar una maravillosa vista de Plasencia. La ruta circular a pie que se muestra en el mapa tiene una longitud de unos 7,5 km.
