Beschrijving
This natural area covers the mouth of the Guadiaro river, the wetland (that is an old island) and the beach. Despite its small size, its characteristics, closer to the Mediterranean Sea than to the Atlantic Ocean, make it an area of high bird's richness, with almost 230 species recorded. The bird species are typical of places of brackish water with little influence of tide and reedbeds: ducks, herons, rails and crakes, waders, seabirds, gulls, terns and waterbird passerines.
Among these species you will find: residents Strandplevier, Purperkoet, IJsvogel or Cetti's Zanger; migrants Ralreiger, Purperreiger, Porseleinhoen, Steltkluut, Audouins Meeuw, Dwergstern, Roodstuitzwaluw or Grote Karekiet; wintering Visarend, Waterral, Buidelmees or Rietgors. You have breeding, among other, like Woudaap and Kleine Karekiet. Some possible rarities are Marmereend, Bokje or Kleinst Waterhoen. The beach is a good place for seabirds, both in winter and on migration, like Kuhls Pijlstormvogel, Vale Pijlstormvogel or Zwarte Zee-eend.
