El Torcal de Antequera is a nature reserve in the Sierra del Torcal mountain range located south of the city of Antequera. It is known for its unusual landforms, and is regarded as one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. The rocky landscape attracts many birds. Among the birds you can encounter are Vale Gier, Slangenarend, Alpengierzwaluw, Alpenkraai, Rode Rotslijster, Blauwe Rotslijster, Grijze Gors, Kleine Zwartkop, Rode Patrijs, Blonde Tapuit and Zwarte Tapuit.

The Torcal de Antequera Nature Reserve is located 40 km north of the city of Malaga and 15 km south of the city of Antequera. Access is through a mountain road between the towns of Antequera and Villanueva de la Concepción. You can park at the Torcal Alto Visitor Center where a series of basic services (exhibition, toilets, restaurant, souvenir sales, etc.). The Torcal de Antequera is more than 1,200 meters above sea level and is a typical medium-mountain terrain. Therefore, to visit it you must equip yourself properly: hiking boots, warm clothes, comfortable backpack with water, etc. The parking area is the starting point for a short walk to an impressive viewpoint and three color-coded hiking trails of 1.5 km, 2.5 km and 4.5 km length which include many scenic viewpoints. But you can als make longer walks. For example the 8 km circular trail indicated on the map below. Because of temperature extremes, you can best visit the area in the spring and fall. May is the best month for birding.
