Beschrijving
In Škocjanski Zatok Nature Reserve since 2001 a total of 259 different bird species have been recorded on this protected area of 122,7 hectares. Up to 50 species of breeding birds have been recorded at the reserve so far, although the exact number varies from year to year. There are two separate areas you can visit: a brackish lagoon and a freshwater marsh. In the brackish lagoon you can see birds like Dwergstern, Visdief, Strandplevier, Kluut and Steltkluut. The freshwater marsh offers an excellent breeding habitat for several species which are rare breeders in Slovenia, such as Woudaap, Waterral, Graszanger and Purperreiger, the latter nesting only here and nowhere else in the country. Also you can often see Dwergaalscholver and Bruine Kiekendief. The dense reedbeds and waterside bushes are occupied by many pairs of Rietzanger, Kleine Karekiet, Grote Karekiet and Cetti's Zanger.
In winter the reserve hosts large numbers of waterbirds. Many ducks, geese and grebes, but also small flocks of Buidelmees, Rietgors and Baardman. The wet meadows are a favoured feeding area of Watersnip, Wulp and Waterpieper. But there are many more birds you can encounter, see the birdlist below.
