The forest of Mata de Belas (Fonteireira) has a good variety of habitats, with some old oaks and ash trees along watercourses, patches of maritime pine, eucalyptus groves, and gorse and heather bushes. The area appears to be less frequented by ornithologists, but on some visits it was possible to find Grote Gele Kwikstaart, Boomklever, Grote Bonte Specht, all species of Portuguese tits, and other common but interesting bird species. The shade of the forest makes for a pleasant walk even on hot days, and the clearings and sparse undergrowth attract butterflies in addition to birds. It's definitely not a must-see for those outside the Lisbon area, but nice to visit when you are in the area.

Português: Bosque agradável com uma variedade boa de habitats bom acesso situada na Serra da Carregueira. Uma boa variedade de habitats, com alguns carvalhos e freixos velhos ao longo de linhas de água, manchas de pinhal-bravo, eucaliptal e matos de tojos e urzes. Zona aparentemente não muito frequentada por ornitólogos, mas em algumas visitas foi possível encontrar Grote Gele Kwikstaart, Boomklever, Grote Bonte Specht, a maioria das espécies de chapins portugueses e outras espécies comuns mas carismáticas de aves. O ensombramento da mata propiciona uma passeio agradável mesmo em dias de calor e as clareiras e matos esparsos atraem borboletas para além das aves. Definitivamente não é sítio a não perder para quem não costuma estar na área de Lisboa, mas a visitar por quem reside na área.

Mata de Belas is located in Belas, just northwest of Lisbon. Access is best via Belas, where there are several car parks where you can leave your car. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking. The area is difficult accessible by public transport. The circular walking route of 6,5 km shown on the map is just a suggestion, there are many other trails you can explore.
