Beschrijving
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Geelpootmeeuw, Kleine Mantelmeeuw and Kokmeeuw. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Regenwulp, Steenloper, Drieteenstrandloper and Oeverloper.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Visdief and Dougalls Stern, but sometimes also Grote Stern.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Kuhls Pijlstormvogel can be observed. Small numbers of Bulwers Stormvogel can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Noordse Pijlstormvogel and Kleine Pijlstormvogel.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Ringsnavelmeeuw, Kleine Burgemeester and, in 2011, a Geelkruinkwak.
