Beschrijving
The Altiplano de Azoia is a windswept dry limestone plateau with wildflowers including gum cistus, green heather, yellow centaury and allseed. Butterflies; swallowtail, Spanish swallowtail. Reptiles; skinks, lizards and whiptail snakes. Mammals; beech marten, Schreiber's bat, horsehoe bats and genet.
Due north from the lighthouse (star mark on the map) there is a display of fossilised dinosaur footprints.
Breeding birds include Kuifleeuwerik, shrikes, Kwartel, Grauwe Gors, Boomleeuwerik, Kleine Zwartkop, Provençaalse Grasmus and Cirlgors. From the western headland at Cabo Espichel, Jan-van-gent, Kuhls Pijlstormvogel, Scopoli's Pijlstormvogel and Vale Pijlstormvogel pass by, and Slechtvalk, Vale Gierzwaluw, Blauwe Rotslijster and Zwarte Roodstaart breed on the cliffs. Also Alpengierzwaluw, Havikarend and Zwarte Spreeuw can be seen in the area.
The area is on a prime migration route. Expect Eleonora's Valk, Beflijster, Morinelplevier and Grote Pieper.
