Once a large private farm, the Tawharanui Regional Park covers the end of a peninsula that extends into the Pacific Ocean just north of Kawau Island.

Proteceted by a pest-proof-fence, Tawharanui Regional Park offers an excellent option to spot some of the more rare species of New-Zealand, like the North Island Takahe. Among the other birds you can see are New Zealand Bellbird, New Zealand Fantail, New Zealand Kaka, Morepork, North Island Robin, North Island Saddleback and Brown Teal. Note that dogs and other pets are prohibited.

Tāwharanui Regional Park: Gate access summer - 6am to 9pm (Daylight saving). An automatic gate is located at the park entrance at the end of Takatu Road. This gate opens and closes automatically for any vehicles leaving the park at all times. Gate access winter - 6am to 7pm (Non-daylight saving). Pedestrian access - Open 24 hours.
