Shallow lake of 628 hectares in southwest Moldova, near the Romanian border. Formed 5,000 years ago by the silting of River Prut. Extensive lush reedbeds.
Lake Beleu (Lacul Beleu) is the best birding site in Moldova. It is one of the largest natural lakes in Moldova. The length of the shallow lake is 5 km, the width 2 km. 170 bird species have been seen here, plus otter and European mink. The birds include IJsvogel, Ralreiger, Koereiger, Lepelaar, Zwarte Ibis, Hop, Bijeneter, Grote Karekiet and Bruine Kiekendief, plus numerous waders on migration. The water level can vary immensely. The lake can freeze in winter. Best to visit outside of high summer or midwinter.
Beleu lake is 204 km south east of Chisinau, Moldova's capital, on the R34 road. Turn right in Valeri to the lake viewing tower, or continue to Slobozia mare for viewpoint. Nearest train station, Slobozia Mare. Presently there is no car park but as of 2022, tenders are invited for its construction.
