The Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa is a protected hilly area located on the first hills to the south-east of Bologna. A karst complex with sinkholes, plateaus, valleys, bare rocky cliffs and natural amphitheaters. The area has more than 100 caves. This landscape hosts many different birds. Abundant species are those linked to bushy environments and transition between forest and crops like Grasmus, Grauwe Gors, Nachtzwaluw, Grauwe Klauwier, Kwartel and Veldleeuwerik. Other birds you can encounter in the area are Moltoni's Baardgrasmus, Bijeneter, Orpheusspotvogel, Boomvalk, Grauwe Kiekendief, Kleine Zwartkop, Rode Patrijs, Bosuil, Dwergooruil, Alpengierzwaluw, Boomleeuwerik, Duinpieper, Gekraagde Roodstaart and Cirlgors.

Italiano: Area collinare protetta. Il parco si sviluppa intorno ad importanti affioramenti gessosi che hanno dato vita ad un complesso carsico di notevole interesse. Nel complesso le specie più caratteristiche sono proprio quelle legate agli ambienti cespugliosi e di transizione tra bosco e coltivi: da segnalare, per la particolare abbondanza, sterpazzola, tortora, succiacapre, averla piccola, strillozzo, quaglia e allodola.

At Villa Torre, a historic building near Settefonti di Ozzano Emilia, the Park Visitor Center has been set up (Via Tolara di Sopra, 99 – Settefonti 40064 Ozzano Emilia (BO), see weblink below for current opening hours) There are many different hiking routes to explore the area. In some cases, in the itineraries characterized by a greater length and a development mainly on paved roads of little traffic and dirt roads, it is possible to use mountain bikes or bicycles. On the map you see a 4 km birdwatching trail (one way) starting from the visitor center over lightly trafficked roads and tracks.

Italiano: Presso Villa Torre, storico edificio nei pressi di Settefonti di Ozzano Emilia, è stato allestito il Centro Visita del Parco, dedicato a vari aspetti ed emergenze dell’Area Protetta ed in particolare all’ambiente calanchivo.. Gli itinerari sono percorsi per lo più escursionistici che si sviluppano nei vari settori dell’area protetta e avvicinano alle sue principali emergenze, spesso ripercorrendo tratti significativi della viabilità storica del territorio. In alcuni casi, negli itinerari caratterizzati da una maggiore lunghezza e da uno sviluppo in prevalenza su strade asfaltate di scarso traffico e strade bianche, è possibile l’utilizzo di mountain bike o biciclette.
