Set amidst the foothills of the Western Ghats and covering 240 square kilometres the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is the largest wildlife preserve within the state of Goa. The sanctuary contains pristine vegetation classified as West Coast tropical evergreen forests, West Coast semi-evergreen forests and moist deciduous forests. The evergreen forests are mainly seen at higher altitudes and along the river banks. The sanctuary has a great diversity of bird species with special birds likely.

Backwoods Camp is located at the heart of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, bounded to one side by a seasonal stream and merging into the forest, making it a perfect location from which to explore the avifauna of the area. Among the birds you can encounter in the area are Blue-eared Kingfisher, Jerdon's Nightjar, Malabar Trogon, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Malabar Parakeet and Blue-capped Rock-Thrush.

Other birds commonly seen within the camp grounds include Flame-throated and Yellow-browed Bulbuls, Orange Minivet, Puff-throated and Dark-fronted Babblers, Heart-spotted Woodpecker, Indian Blackbird, Malabar Whistling-thrush, Orange-headed Thrush, Indian Pitta, Small Sunbird, Nilgiri Flowerpecker, Asian Fairy Bluebird, Black-naped Blue Monarch, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Oriental Scops Owl and Brown Hawk-owl.

Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the eastern border of the state of Goa, near the village of Mollem. It is about 53km from Margao and 54km from Panaji. You can drive to the area and explore locally. Or you can stay at Backwoods Camp, they have a website (see the link below). The camp is owned and run by birders.

Backwoods Camp is located in the village of Matkan near Tambdi Surla. The camp is just a few kilometres from the border of Goa with the neighbouring state of Karnataka, and a distance of approximately 70 km (a travel time of 1hr 45min) from the coast and the capital city, Panjim. The camp and surrounding areas have a bird list of over 260 species.
