Beschrijving
Gellért-hegy, practically in the center of Budapest, is a 235 m high hill overlooking the Danube. The area offers a good opportunity for a bit of birdwatching. The best places for this are the walkways below the southern slope of the Citadel, where there are bushy, wooded areas. Naturally, the best time for this is during migration, but quite a few species can be observed here throughout the rest of the year as well. During the spring migration you can easily observe Bonte Vliegenvanger, Withalsvliegenvanger, Fluiter and in autumn Koperwiek and Vuurgoudhaan. Nachtegaal is breeding. It’s worth going early in the morning when there are fewer dog walkers and tourists.

Gellért-hegy is located practically in the center of Budapest. The best way is to arrive on foot. You can walk up from the Danube or take bus 27. In this case, you need to go to the Búsuló Juhász (Citadel) stop. It’s best to walk on the southern side of the hill to watch birds. During migration, it’s worth paying special attention to the birds flying over. It takes about 2-3 hours to explore the entire area, but even if you have less time, it’s still worth walking up.
