Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Boerenzwaluw roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Groenpootruiter, Bosruiter, Watersnip, Oeverloper, Witgat, IJsvogel, Alpengierzwaluw, Kleine Zilverreiger, Geelpootmeeuw, Putter, Italiaanse Mus and Cetti's Zanger.

You can reach the lake from the town when following the road "Palea EO Chanion Rethimnou". The Boerenzwaluw roost is at the opposite position of the town.
