Great place for wetland and grassland birds, including a superb visitor center, where birds (including rarities) can be observed up-close.
On the northern side of the dike wide grassland plains offer great feeding opportunities to thousands of Geese (especially Brandgans), ducks, raptors and waders. On the southern side of the dyke, waders, gulls and Zeearendcan be found along the shoreline of the Elbe, feeding in the mudflats. Bird migration here can be great, several rare species breed here and the observation situation at "NABU Vogelstation Wedeler Marsch" is phenomenal, often including rarities and scarcities.
Much of the area is closed off to cars. Either you drive to "Fährmannssand" or "Hetlinger Schanze", where you can park your car or you take the subway "S1" until the station "Wedel" and then walk/take the bike.
A bike can be of great use, as the conditions are optimal and you can cover much more ground.
The visitor center "NABU Vogelstation Wedeler Marsch" (formerely Carl Zeiss Vogelstation) offers awesome observation conditions, but is always open. You can find opening times here: https://hamburg.nabu.de/natur-und-landschaft/carl-zeiss-vogelstation/index.html
Beautiful site, some parts with free entry including the dike, others managed by NBU close early
Not sure why people would give this place a bad rating. It's a beautiful stretch of land where you have various sites to observe birds and other animals from. On top of that, you have the "NABU Vogelstation Wedeler Marsch" with three hides, some information material and binoculars for rent. And at the Schanzenteich, you have an observation tower.
