A walk along the Wandse river in Hamburg from the Friedrichsberger Strasse Bridge to Eichtalpark offers nice urban bird watching.
Right through the city, the river Wandse is a small oasis of nature. Although you do have to cross roads every now and then, the river flows through landscaped parks and partly through rather wild nature. There are also small dammed ponds.
Along the route there are opportunities for bird watching, especially of course water birds such as various species of duck (Wilde Eend, Kuifeend etc.), but Fuut, Waterhoen and Meerkoet can also be seen, in summer of course also with their offspring. Dodaars can also be seen, especially in winter when it is frosty. Blauwe Reiger can also always be seen and if you are lucky you can also spot IJsvogel. Many songbirds can be observed in the trees and bushes along the path, such as Pimpelmees, Staartmees, Zwartkop, Tjiftjaf or Fitis, and in winter also Goudhaan.
There are certainly no extremely rare species to observe here, but the main advantage of urban nature is that the birds are not very shy. This is particularly beneficial for bird photographers, because good pictures can be taken. In addition, the walk along the water offers a relaxed change in the middle of the city. The path is also open to cyclists.
The path marked on the map leads from Friedrichsberger Park to the Botanischen Sondergartenl (Botanical Garden), but you can of course go further. The Wandse is 25 km long until it flows from its source in the Storman district into the Alster. The path from Friedrichsberger Park to the Alster is also very beautiful, although the river has been turned into a canal, enclosed with high walls with the exception of the very beautiful Kuhmühlenteich.
The Wandse flows through the northeast of Hamburg. You can park in the many side streets along the Wandse, although you should check whether there are any parking restrictions. The Friedrichsberg S-Bahn is nearby, and further along the Wandsbek Markt U-Bahn. The entire route along the Wandse is open to cyclists. The route indicated on the map is about 4,5 km one way.
On the banks of the Wandse is the 'Botanische Sondergarten', a three-hectare historical botanical garden. Admission is free and there are regular events and guided tours.
