The Stolpsee is a nice lake with extended reed beds. Good for birds like Woudaap, Visarend, Wielewaal, Grote Karekiet and Zeearend.
The Stolpsee is one of the many small lakes in the area. Most of the lakes are reservoirs and have steep slopes. Unless the Stolpsee, that has a gently sloping bottom that gives rise to extended reed beds around the lake (Woudaap , Grote Karekiet , Blauwe Reiger ) and abundant growth of underwater plants that attract Meerkoet. In spring the water might be quite clear according to the depth that water plants can grow under water (up to 3-4 m depth). In the warm summer of 2020 the water was more turbid. Much more wetland species may be around in spring than we have seen during the summer. Tourists are present in small numbers (apart from the camping on the border of the Stolpsee) and the number of boats on the water is quite small. Perfect sunsets can be witnessed from the small pier inside the camping on the eastern border of the lake. A bit earlier than the sunset, one can see the Visarend making its last round for the day, trying to catch some fish.
Drive to Himmelpfort in the direction of Camping Himmelpfort. There is a small beach north of the camping that gives an overview of the lake with reed beds nearby. The camping has its own beach and public Italian restaurant. Kayaks can be rented for a boat trip around the lake. This is the preferred way of accessing this area to spot Blauwe Reiger, Fuut, Meerkoet, Kleine Karekiet, Grote Karekiet, Visarend among others.. A small pier protrudes into the water from where Grote Karekiet can be heard, Visarend can be seen hovering above the lake and Woudaap occasionally flies from one reed bed to another. A public footpath leads through the camping to a 'Naturlehrpfad' (Nature educational path) with information signs along the way. Access by bike is possible. The first stretch southwards stays in close proximity to the lake and gives access to the borders of the lake. Along the path (starting inside the camping) Wielewaal , Zanglijster , Vink , Groenling , Grote Bonte Specht , Grijskopspecht , Raaf can be seen and heard. The path goes further south- and eastwards along the river Havel (watch out for IJsvogel and Rode Wouw). Several options to turn northwards through the dry woodland present itself to return to the starting point. The route that is shown on the map is 6,3 km.
