At 389 hectares, the Ohlsdorf cemetery is the largest park cemetery in the world, with many songbirds and waterfowl.
The Ohlsdorfer Friedhof is very naturally laid out and therefore offers a refuge for many birds. In addition to lawns, there are many hedges, a good 36,000 trees and 15 ponds. Accordingly, in addition to many species of birds, there are also other animals such as squirrels, rabbits, hedgehogs, martens, deer, foxes, as well as many butterflies and wild bees.
First and foremost, the park is a good area for observing songbirds, but also woodpeckers and birds of prey. On the various bodies of water you can also see geese and other water birds, sometimes even IJsvogel. An educational trail about birds and bats with 13 information boards was created.
Among the birds you can encounter are Zwartkop, Zanglijster, Heggenmus, Fitis, Tjiftjaf, Boomkruiper, Glanskop, Zwarte Mees, Meerkoet, Waterhoen, IJsvogel, Kuifeend, Gaai, Torenvalk and Oehoe.
Ohlsdorf Cemetery is located in Ohlsdorf in the north of Hamburg and only three minutes' walk from the subway station Ohlsdorf. Opening and closing of the gates: April - October: 8 am – 9 pm, November - March: 8 am – 6 pm.
Getting there by car: You are allowed to drive into the cemetery area and park at all chapels. The cemetery has four entrances and exits for cars. There is a barrier in the middle of the area on Mittelallee between Ida-Ehre-Allee and Linne-Straße. By car you should choose your entrance depending on your destination. Western part of the cemetery: entrance to Fuhlsbüttler Straße 756 (Ohlsdorf district). Eastern part: Bramfeld entrance (Bramfelder Chaussee, Bramfeld district), Seehof entrance (Bramfeld district) or Kornweg entrance (Alsterdorf/Klein Borstel district).
By bus and train from Hamburg: S-Bahn line S 11 in the direction of Ohlsdorf or S 1 and subway line U 1. The main entrance, Fuhlsbüttler Straße, is just a three-minute walk from Ohlsdorf train station. Bus lines 170 and 270 only run in the cemetery. Bus frequency is 20 or 30 minutes.
Ohlsdorfer Friedhof is a cemetery, which means you should behave respectfully, especially if you encounter a funeral procession. The cemetery administration provides a map on its website (see the link below).
The circular walk of 10 km indicated on the map below starts from subway station Ohlsdorf. This walk is just a suggestion. If you take the short cut that is also indicated on the map, the walk is about 5 km. There are many other trails and paths to explore the cemetery.
